Laboratories

The Institute houses state of art laboratories to cater to the needs of different research mandates. Biotechnology Lab is equipped with Tissue Culture Facility, Plant Hardening and Establishment Unit, Insect Bioassay Facility. Modern LAB equipments like Tissue Lysis System, Thermal cyclers, Tetrad PCR, Real time PCR, PhosphoImager, Blotting and Hybridization Systems, Vertical and Horizontal Gel electrophoresis Units, Sequi-Gen Unit, AFLP System, 2D electrophoresis, Iso Electric Focussing (IEF), Homogenizer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Nano-Spectrophotometer, Electroporator, Electrofusion apparatus, Plant Growth Incubators, CO2 Incubators, Advanced Research Microscopes with live Imaging Facility, ELISA Reader, Centrifuges, Lyophilizer, Particle Delivery System (Gene Gun) etc. are in operation.Biotechnology Unit has around 1000 square feet inoculation room cum tissue culture facility. It has six horizontal laminar flow enabling to work for 12 people at a time. Culture rooms have total thirty culture trolleys to accommodate in vitro materials from chickpea, pigeonpea and Vigna crops.

Crop Physiology and biochemistry and Microbiology (CPBM) Labs is equipped with an advanced powerful stress monitoring system called Chlorophyll fluorescene imaging systemenabling to monitor photosynthesis in plants under different abiotic stresses. Based on imaging patterns, the precise diagnosis of plant activities under stress can be made. The image patterns keep changing with the level of stress. The response of different genotypes to stress can be accessed through interpretating the images and colour codes. A CO2 Growth chamberhas also been created to monitor response of different pulses to CO2 enrichment coupled with high temperature and drought. The Growth chamber is equipped with microprocessor unit which controls humidity, light, photoperiod, temperature and CO2 as per users’ defined programme. Besides these, the Lab also has a plant canopy analyser for leaf area index and other growth analysis.

The Institute is having pulse processing Lab with a Mini Dal Mill for large scale testing for chickpea. Overall capacity of the mill ranged between 109-122 kg/h and over all dal recovery of 76% was obtained. Different emery grades (16, 20, 24, 30 & 36) have also been evaluated for dehusking of pigeonpea with 74% dal recovery at 30 number emery grade for untreated grains.
